Ping & Diagnostics Tools
In managing any complex data network having a collection of Ping and Diagnostic tools are a requirement.  The SolarWinds Toolset includes a broad assortment of not only the basic utilities but also some "very special" enhanced tools.  The Trace Route Utility performs real-time SNMP across the public internet. The Trace Route is also multithreaded in that it pings each hop concurrently displaying packet loss and performance. The Enhanced Ping application has one of the most impressive graphing engines available.  SolarWinds, making the tools do more so you don't have to....

Trace Route - The Trace Route from SolarWinds is the fastest trace route on the internet.  This utility can quickly trace a route from your computer to any other device.  Trace Route not only displays the response time for each node but resolves the DNS real time. It reports the standard ICMP information but also SNMP information like Machine Type, ISO Level, boot time, etc. in real time.

Proxy Ping - With Proxy Ping it is possible to remotely initiate a PING test from any remote Cisco router to any other SNMP enabled device. The ICMP PING results are calculated based packets sent from the Cisco router directly to the other remote device.  This tools is great for testing links between two remote sites.

Enhanced Ping - Results are displayed both graphically as well as in a table at the bottom of the screen.  As with most of tools from SolarWinds Enhanced Ping can be zoom into the results and modify the formats while the tool is running.  You can dynamically add and delete nodes without needing to restart the test.  You can even adjust the ICMP parameters of the test to improve data collection. Enhanced Ping has an extremely powerful graphing utility that allows you to view the results as a Ribbon Chart, Bar Chart, Column Chart, Step Chart and Area Chart.

TFTP Server - While there are many TFTP Servers already available,  we were working on a large network audit project and need a Multi-Threaded TFTP Server that could handle many file transfers simultaneously.  We could not find one that was reliable.
The SolarWinds TFTP Server has the ability to send and receive multiple files concurrently. This TFTP Server is commonly used to upload/download executable images and configurations to routers, switches, hubs, XTerminals, etc.

Wake-On-LAN - The SolarWinds Wake-On-LAN utility has the ability to "power on" a PC remotely.  This is accomplished by the generation of a "Magic Packet" to remotely power on PCs attached to networks.  When the remote network adapter hears a "Magic Packet" created for it’s unique MAC address the network adapter alerts the computer to power on.  If Wake ON LAN has been enabled in the computer’s BIOS settings, the system will power on as if the power button had been pressed.

PING sweep performs a very fast scan across an entire range of IP Addresses. Ping Sweep displays IP addresses are in use (or not in use). Also supports reverse DNS lookup for each address.  This is a very handy quick and simple subnet discovery tool.

PING -  The SolarWinds version of the "Simple Ping" tool keeps a running response time log and allows exporting to HTML, RTF and Text  files. This graphical PING continuously shows the following:

-    Current response time

-    Running average response time in milliseconds (ms)

-    Current Packet Loss due to dropped packets

WAN Killer -  This utility is "not" a WAN Killer is more of a Wide Area Network traffic generator. Set the circuit bandwidth and the percent of load needed and WAN Killer will generate random traffic. The packet size can also be adjusted.  With the WAN Killer you can specify the amount of load you desire, 25% 50% 100% or even 150%.  WAN Killer will interactively test the connection and adjust the traffic generate to achieve the desired load based on your requirements.
