Scalable Architecture
InterMapper's sub-maps can be hosted on InterMapper
servers at remote locations. This allows managers of large networks to
distribute the monitoring effort across several InterMapper servers. This
has a number of advantages:
- Decreased network traffic by keeping most
monitoring traffic local to a site. For example, if a company had a
central office and three branch offices, it could install an InterMapper
at each office. Each office's InterMapper would monitor the local
network, and the central office's map could show a summary of the branch
office status on a top-level map.
- Local and/or Global Responsibility InterMapper
allows the central network administrator to grant access rights to the
branch office staff or not, as the policy dictates.
- Full Visibility The central office staff can see
any of the sub-maps from the branch office simply by using InterMapper
Remote. A double-click opens the submap to show the full details.
- Remote Administration of InterMapper The central
staff can also configure any of the branch office maps using InterMapper
Remote.
- Maintain Security Even when there are firewalls
and/or VPNs between the offices, InterMapper's sub-maps still provide
full details to the network manager. The firewall can be configured to
allow InterMapper's traffic through a user-selected port for the
communication between the servers.
