Notification of Problems
InterMapper notifies one or more of the network managers
and support staff about problems within the network. These notifications
may be any of the following:
- Sounds InterMapper can be configured to play
audible alarms (sounds) when devices go down, return to service, or
reach certain error threshholds.
- E-mail InterMapper will send one or many people
e-mail about a condition.
- Pager InterMapper sends pages to one or many
people using built-in SNPP support. It can also send pages using an
analogue modem.
- SNMP Traps InterMapper will send an SNMP Trap to
a desired trap receiver whenever any condition occurs.
- AppleEvents InterMapper can launch scripts or
other Macintosh programs to perform a function whenever a specific
condition is detected. (Macintosh only.)
- WinPopup InterMapper can send WinPopup messages.
(Windows only.)
Scheduled Notifications
A network manager can set up notification schedules so
that different individuals are notified based on the time of day. For
example, a three-shift operation might schedule different people to be
notified at different times of the day, or to notify the "weekend pager"
only on Saturday and Sunday.
Escalation
Notifications can also have a time delay before being
sent. This can be used to minimize nuisance alarms, by delaying a minute
or two before notifying.
This delay can be used to escalate notifications. One page
can occur immediately; another can happen if the device is still down
after two minutes; yet another can be scheduled to go off if the device
remains down after an hour.
Command-line (Plugin) Notifiers
InterMapper can invoke a command-line script/program on
Windows/MacOS X/Linux/Unix to perform an action in response to a failure.
This is described in the Command-line
Notifier section of the manual.
